Originally named ‘Sydney’ after founder Malie M. Jackson’s home town in Ohio, the name was legally changed to Buckeye in 1910, due to the significance of the Buckeye Canal. The town was incorporated in 1929, at which time it included 440 acres. It became the City of Buckeye in 2014. According to 2000 census, the population was 6,537. It grew to 50,876 inhabitants in 2010, an astonishing 678.3% growth rate. The City of Buckeye is located approximately 30 miles west of downtown Phoenix. There are currently 30 master planned communities in various states of development in Buckeye.

Buckeye Hills Recreation Area is located 7 miles south of downtown Buckeye on SR 85. Skyline Regional Park features many miles of hiking trails for pedestrians, mountain bikers and equestrians; picnic areas and camping. Admission is free.
